Every cake has a story. Ours began in a kitchen in Southern Italy, where a young girl learned that taking time to do things properly wasn't just about baking — it was about showing people they matter.
Standing at Nonna's Table
While other children played outside, Annamaria stood at the end of her mum Angelina's table, watching daily masterclasses in patience and care. Her Nonna's kitchen was where she learned the art of the perfect sponge cake — not from a recipe book, but from watching hands that had made the same movements a thousand times before.
Her first cake was a simple Panettone with lemon. From that moment, baking became how she expressed love.
"You Should Open a Business!"
Years later, working at a doctor's surgery in England, Annamaria would bring in her homemade cakes. Her colleagues consistently told her the same thing: "You should open a business!" But she never imagined people would actually pay for her creations. These were just family recipes, made the way they'd always been made. Nothing fancy. Nothing complicated. Just proper cakes.
The Moment Everything Changed
Everything changed during lockdown. A conversation with a careers counsellor in 2020 gave her the push she needed. Looking for a fresh start in September of that year, Annamaria baked a cake and posted it on Facebook.
People started asking if they could order.
Soon she was facing her first official order: a red velvet birthday cake. Despite her self-doubt — "I hope this tastes amazing" — the cake was a hit. Word spread quickly, and before long, orders were coming in from as far away as Bradford.
Built on Belief
The real story behind Scannella's Kitchen isn't just about cakes. It's about having the courage to try, the support of a community, and the joy of seeing people love what you do.
This business exists because people believed in Annamaria before she believed in herself. Friends who encouraged her. Colleagues who kept asking for more. Customers who told their families, who told their friends, who told their neighbours.
Every new customer is a recommendation from someone whose celebration we were part of. We've never spent a penny on advertising. Every order, every message, every "where did you get this cake?!" moment has come from word of mouth alone.
And today, Annamaria is proud — proud of what she's built, proud of the joy her cakes bring, and proud of the people who continue to cheer her on.
Your Celebration, Our Story
When you order from Scannella's Kitchen, you're not just getting a cake. You're getting a piece of someone's heritage, made with the same care she'd give her own family. Your celebration becomes part of our story, and we become part of yours.
